   ocr: The Moon's Surface The moon has a wide variety. of surface features, some of which we can see from Earth. The most notable feature are the Mares, or oceans." They are not liquid oceans, but large, dark-colored plains of dust. They appear to us as dark areas on the moon. The mares are believed to be ancient lava flows, long since cooled. The roughness of the moon's surface is due to impact craters. These are remnants of collisions with numerous asterolds, comets, or other material. Through binoculars, one Can see the cratered surface in good detail.
